The Teachings
Emahó carried the essence of the ancient wisdom traditions – Buddhism, Christianity, Sufism – yet his language was free from religion, morality, and dogma. He recommended no meditation, no mantras, no prescribed path. His talks began with the simple struggles of daily life and opened gradually toward what he called “the astronaut’s perspective.”
At times he talked from the heart in a poetic and cryptic way, at other times he addressed the mechanics of the the mind illustratively and humourously in order to show: „You are not your mind“.
Emahó often spoke about the paradox of life and predicament of living in a world of growth and decay, and the uniqueness and preciousness of life itself. His intent was to touch and awaken the human heart – one that is not rooted in sentimentality, but in the courage to face the struggles, sorrows, and challenges of daily life. This heart embraces the mystery of our existence, humbly acknowledging the two great doors of birth and death.
He often said, that his purpose was not to polish our personalities, rather, to guide us to ‚dying alive.‘ To die alive means to understand the human condition – living as biological species on this planet – without yielding to the inevitable pain and disappointments of social life and human existence, while simultaneously realizing the preciousness of our existence and so much more.
When he passed away in 2023, bowing at the end of a sweat lodge in Santa Fe, he left behind no institution – only more open hearts and minds, lifelong friendships, and increasing understanding in those he touched.
